The Bookshelf

133-Chained-library-at-Wimborne-Minster-961x574I love when I find excellent books that don’t normally make the usual “Must Read” lists. They aren’t really classics, and they never won an award—you might never have heard of them—but they are a good read. They are the kind of books you discover on a friend’s shelves or a book shoved into your hands by a relative or one you bought but forgot about. These are some of my favorites on my own bookshelves.

  1. Dandelion Cottage  |  Carroll Watson Rankin
  2. Jane of Lantern Hill  |  L. M Montgomery
  3. The Rescuers  |  Margery Sharp ills. Garth Williams
  4. Papa’s Wife  |  Thyra Ferre Bjorn
  5. The Arkadians  |  Lloyd ALexander
  6. Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher  |  Bruce Coville (there a few books in this series, but I do not like them as much)
  7. The Island of Horses  |  Eilís Dillon
  8. The 13 Clocks  |  James Thurber ills. Marc Simont
  9. Sweet Home Alaska  |  Carole Estby Dagg
  10. A Traveler In Time  |  Alison Uttley
  11. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang  |  Ian Flemming
