I love when I find excellent books that don’t normally make the usual “Must Read” lists. They aren’t really classics, and they never won an award—you might never have heard of them—but they are a good read. They are the kind of books you discover on a friend’s shelves or a book shoved into your hands by a relative or one you bought but forgot about. These are some of my favorites on my own bookshelves.
- Dandelion Cottage | Carroll Watson Rankin
- Jane of Lantern Hill | L. M Montgomery
- The Rescuers | Margery Sharp ills. Garth Williams
- Papa’s Wife | Thyra Ferre Bjorn
- The Arkadians | Lloyd ALexander
- Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher | Bruce Coville (there a few books in this series, but I do not like them as much)
- The Island of Horses | Eilís Dillon
- The 13 Clocks | James Thurber ills. Marc Simont
- Sweet Home Alaska | Carole Estby Dagg
- A Traveler In Time | Alison Uttley
- Chitty Chitty Bang Bang | Ian Flemming
